Description
We commonly speak of the animal and plant kingdoms. Yet there is also a third kingdom: the mineral kingdom, the Crystal Kingdom underlying the other two kingdoms in subtle ways.
In the sea, the skeletons of sponges and other marine creatures often contain crystalline structures of calcium, silica, or strontium. Sea and land vertebrates owe their support and mobility to the exquisite frameworks of crystalline bones that travel within them and give flexible support to their every movement. Crystals grow naturally within animal and plant cells. And magnetic crystals permit navigation and orientation for life forms that swim, fly, or walk—including human beings.
Despite their presence in living things, the subjects of the Crystal Kingdom do not live. They do not bear offspring. Yet they grow and change, and can resurrect themselves after complete destruction, rising like alchemical phoenixes from the elements of their dissolution.
